‘Yes or No?’ Jake Tapper Grills Mississippi Governor for a Direct Answer on Whether He Accepts Biden Is the Legitimate President
CNN’s Jake Tapper put Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves (R) through an intense interrogation on whether he accepts that Joe Biden is the legitimate president of the United States.
Tapper spoke to Reeves on Sunday for a State of the Union interview on the state’s decision to roll back some covid restrictions. Tapper eventually switched gears by noting that former President Donald Trump is still pushing the false claim that the election was corrupted by mass fraud, so he asked Reeves, “Do you accept that Joe Biden is the legitimately and lawfully elected president of the United States?”
“President Biden is the president of the United States,” Reeves answered, but Tapper immediately called out the sidestep.
“Was he legitimately and lawfully elected?” Tapper asked again.
Reeves went on ahead with a condemnation of mail-in voting, though he did describe Biden as the “duly-elected president.” Tapper followed up by pointing out the lack of evidence that the election was corrupted by mass voter fraud, and added that lie is what fueled Trump’s supporters when they violently laid siege to the U.S. Capitol two months ago.
“Yes or no, do you accept that the 2020 presidential election was free and fair?” Tapper asked. “Obviously, every election has some questions, but I’m talking about free and fair legitimately-elected Joe Biden. Yes or no?”
“As you said, every election has questions and this one was no different,” Reeves said. “Joe Biden is the duly-elected president of the United States. He was certified by all 50 states either having won or loss, and he lost my state by 20 points, but he was certified in each of the individual states and certified by the U.S. Congress and he is the duly-elected president.”
