A recent Wall Street Journal poll found that Tesla CEO Elon Musk is becoming more unpopular in the public’s eyes as the prominent Trump ally begins his leadership of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency.
A poll conducted by the newspaper just before Trump was inaugurated shows that Musk’s popularity is falling after taking the reigns over DOGE. President Donald Trump has appointed Musk to root out government waste and ensure that taxpayer money is being used responsibly by government agencies.
However, the WSJ poll published last week, found that Musk’s favorability rating stands at 40% with the public while 51% disapprove of the billionaire Tesla CEO.
As noted by Wake Up To Politics newsletter author Gabe Fleisher, Musk previously had a favorability rating that was dead even with his unfavourability rating, tied at 45% back in October.
Something to pay attention to: per WSJ poll, Elon Musk’s unfavorability has ticked up six points since October; his favorability has gone done five points.

Despite his falling favorability numbers, Musk still remains powerful in Trump’s inner circle. Following Trump’s November victory, he was a staple at Mar-a-Lago and was involved in high-level discussions during presidential transition meetings. Moreover, Musk spoke at Trump’s inauguration victory speech in DC earlier this week and was seen next to the family as Trump took the oath of office.
The poll was taken between January 9th and 14th among 750 registered voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5%. The Murdoch-owned news agency conducted the survey via telephone and text-to-web with respondents.
