‘Good Times!’ CNN’s Jake Tapper and His Entire Studio Bust Out Laughing As Republicans Fail to Elect Speaker
CNN anchor Jake Tapper and his entire studio broke out laughing after Congress recessed following a failed vote to elect a new Republican speaker of the House.
The political world was stunned two weeks ago when McCarthy was voted out as speaker of the House and then announced he would not run for the position again.
Since then, Republicans have scrambled to figure out how to proceed, briefly considering the nictitating candidacy of Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) before moving on to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH).
On Tuesday’s edition of CNN News Central, Tapper anchored coverage of the latest speaker vote, which ended with Jordan falling well short and the House calling it a day without trying another vote — generating stunned laughter from anyone within range of a CNN microphone:
REP. PATRICK MCHENRY: Total number of votes cast is 432, of which the Honorable Jim Jordan of the state of Ohio has received 200 votes.
The Honorable Hakeem Jeffries of the State of New York has received 212 votes.
(APPLAUSE).
The Honorable Kevin McCarthy of the state of California has received six votes. Lee Zeldin of the State of New York has received three. The Honorable Steve Scalise of the state of Louisiana has received seven. The Honorable Mike Garcia of the state of California has received one. The Honorable Tom Emmer of the State of Minnesota has received one. The Honorable Tom Cole of the State of Oklahoma has received one. The Honorable Thomas Massie of the State of Kentucky has received one.
No person having received a majority of the whole number of votes cast by surname, a speaker has not been elected. Pursuant to clause 12a of Rule one, the chair declares the House in recess, subject to the call of the chair.
JAKE TAPPER; All right. Well! (laughing) I guess they’re not going to call a second vote!
(all laughing).
Good times!
