Kevin McCarthy Hit With Brutal, Since-Removed Community Note On X After Resigning: ‘He Just Quit’

After former Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced his resignation, a Community Note was attached to an old post where he vowed to “never quit.”

McCarthy wrote a op-ed for the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday where he announced the end of of his nearly two decade career in the House of Representatives, effective at the end of this year. His time as speaker was marked by controversy as he led a divided Republican majority that ended in his ouster 10 months into his speakership.

On Sept. 19, McCarthy’s account on X posted a video of the former speaker telling reporters he does not plan on quitting as he tried to push through legislation to stop the federal government from shutting down.

“I never quit. I’m not working for some member sitting in my conference. I’m working for this country and I’m never going to give up on the American people. I’m going to work every day. And you know what? If I come up short today, I’m going to work harder tomorrow. That’s what I do,” McCarthy says in the video.

Following his resignation a Community Note briefly appeared under the video with a link to McCarthy’s resignation in the WSJ and the caption, “He just quit.”

On X, Community Notes allow users to leave responses on any post clarifying information or adding context to potentially misleading tweets. If enough users rate the note as helpful then it appears publicly beneath the initial post.

However, the Community Note given to McCarthy’s post was eventually removed, but not before users on social media used it to mock the former speaker.
