WATCH: Trump Spox Reveals Live on Fox News That Army Helicopter Collided With Airliner
Trump White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed live on Fox News that the aircraft involved in the still-unfolding air disaster in Washington, D.C. was an Army helicopter — and that President Donald Trump had been fully briefed on the incident.
The nation was stunned when an American Airlines flight with over 60 people aboard collided with a Black Hawk Army helicopter near Ronald Reagan National Airport at 8:48 pm Wednesday night.
On Wednesday night’s edition of Fox News Channel’s Hannity, Leavitt gave host Sean Hannity a scoop when she confirmed details that were not yet known about the tragedy:
SEAN HANNITY, FOX NEWS HOST: Joining us now is White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is with us.
Karoline, we obviously had you book for a very different reason on the program tonight but you see what’s going on at the Potomac, not far from where you work every day.
Unfortunately, online, I can’t verify the truth of it, there is a video that shows two aircraft colliding over the Potomac. I’m looking at the emergency response.
Have you heard anything at the White House?
KAROLINE LEAVITT, WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY: Yes, Sean. Of course, this was not the planed topic of discussion for your program tonight. But in light of this breaking news, I have called over to my counterparts at the White House and I can confirm that President Trump has been made aware of this situation.
And tragically, it appears that a military helicopter collided with a regional jet at DCA Airport, right here in Washington, D.C. That’s all I can confirm at this point in time.
And I can just say that the thoughts and the prayers of the entire Trump administration are with all those that are involved and we ask the public in this area to please stand by for guidance from law enforcement and allow them to do their jobs as they attempt to save lives right now.
HANNITY: I think that’s very well said and good advice for everybody.
The activity, Karoline, as we look at the videos here seems to be on the on the Potomac River, and again that — that kind of response is massive and if you’re confirming that a military chopper had some collision, it seems to be over the area of the Potomac is — have you gotten any information on that aspect of it?
LEAVITT: Uh-huh. Again, the information that I was just given was that it was a military helicopter that appears to have collided with a regional jet. And there are many inter-agencies that are working on this response right now. Both federal and local law enforcement are working together on the ground to try to save as many lives as possible and the president will continue to monitor this situation.
HANNITY: Yeah. Karoline, it turns out that you’re right. The FAA apparently putting out a statement: The regional jet and a Black Hawk helicopter, according to the FAA, is now — that’s their verbatim. That is — that is absolutely chilling.
I should note for people that a regional jet would be in most cases a smaller jet. Not one that would have 150 passengers. I had a congressman write me that they are hearing that as many as 60 souls — 60 passengers on board.
Our — our prayers are with all of them right now. We have no information about — about the status of any of them. But the early video that I saw online if that is accurate, it does not look good.
Karoline, I know this has been a very busy time for you and I know this was not the topic of discussion. We look forward to having you back. You did a great job in your opening press briefing yesterday and we appreciate you spending the time with us. Thank you.
LEAVITT: Thank you, Sean.
