Al Franken’s Office Announces His Resignation Date: January 2

When Sen. Al Franken announced he was going to resign from his position, after numerous reports of sexual misconduct, he didn’t give an exact timetable. He simply said he would be leaving his post “in the coming weeks.”
When it was revealed that Franken would be replaced, on an interim basis, by Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith, people began to wonder when the transition would officially occur.
Now we know.
Multiple news outlets have reported that Franken will step down on January 2, leaving Smith to be sworn in the very next day.
Franken spoke on the Senate floor this morning, noting that he would continue to be an “educated citizen and an advocate and an activist.”
On Dec. 7, when the former SNL star announced he would be stepping down, Franken lobbed some shade at President Donald Trump, who has faced his own share of scrutiny for alleged sexual misconduct.
“I of all people am aware that there is some irony in the fact that I am leaving while a man who bragged on tape about his history of the sexual assault sits in the Oval Office, and a man who repeatedly preyed on young girls campaigns for the Senate with the full support of his party,” he said. “But this decision is not about me. It’s about the people of Minnesota.”
Smith will serve in the interim, until Nov. 2018, when the state will hold a special election for the seat. As a matter of fact, both Minnesota seats will be up for grabs next year.
