Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Condemns NY State Voting, Reveals She Faced Problems Trying to Vote for Herself
Political non-profit VoteRunLead convened a panel discussion with a group of barrier-breaking women candidates from last week’s midterm elections.
Congresswomen-elects Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley were part of a panel discussion on the “New Faces of Congress” moderated by Rewire.News’ Jodi Jacobson, in which they shared their experiences in running for office and their plans for the 116th Congress.
During the nearly hour-long interview (which you can watch in its entirety here), Ocasio-Cortez shared harsh words for what she deemed the “shameful” voting systems in New York state. She also added that she wasn’t even able to vote for herself due to broken voting machines in her precinct, video of which you can watch above.
The panel was memorialized via an Ocasio-Cortez Instagram photo she captioned “ocasio2018 Squad,” which then went viral.
Vilardi released the following statement regarding the viral VoteRunLead moment:
We at VoteRunLead were thrilled to see the photo of Congresswomen-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley and Illhan Omar (A VoteRunLead alum) go viral.
What we want people to know about this photo is that these women didn’t come together by accident. They came together to share their expertise and to inspire more women from all backgrounds to run for office, as part of VoteRunLead’s Women and Power 2018 National Town Hall event.
We love that this photo is being recognized as #SquadGoals because that is exactly what women bring to government. They band together to get things done. That’s why VoteRunLead is building squads like this in every state across America, because we know that when women come together, our democracy works better for everyone. And those are #SquadGoals we all should have.
