AP Under Fire for Tweet that Called Amal Clooney ‘Actor’s Wife’
Amal Clooney is a human rights lawyer who is representing Mohamed Fahmy, one of three Al Jazeera journalists who was recently sentenced to three years in prison in Egypt. She is also actor George Clooney’s wife.
But when the Associated Press tweeted a piece about her involvement in the case on Saturday, they decided to specifically highlight that latter distinction, despite its apparent irrelevance to the story. And nowhere in the actual article was her relation to the Hollywood star mentioned.

People on Twitter were not amused:
The @AP refers to Amal Clooney as 'actor's wife,' not 'human rights lawyer' https://t.co/puEXCKmEvV

But at least one reporter acknowledged the sad reality at hand:
I get why people are upset about this but 1) she is the actor's wife, & 2) like it or not that’s why America cares https://t.co/ErxsiG2zZl
