Avril Lavigne Accused of Racism over Incredibly Trippy ‘Hello Kitty’ Music Video
Avril Lavigne, who you might remember best as the artist who did that one song you vaguely remember from ten years ago, is coming under fire with charges of racism leveled against her over the music video for her new song “Hello Kitty.” In the video, Lavigne speaks a little Japanese and video itself was filmed in Japan, but rather than being a tribute to Japanese culture, critics believe that Lavigne is actually making a mockery of that very culture with the video.
However the level of criticism was, it was big enough to warrant an official response from Lavigne herself on Twitter.
RACIST??? LOLOLOL!!! I love Japanese culture and I spend half of my time in Japan. I flew to Tokyo to shoot this video…

…specifically for my Japanese fans, WITH my Japanese label, Japanese choreographers AND a Japanese director IN Japan.
