Bret Baier Distances Himself From Looming Ailes Controversy: ‘These Headlines Are Foreign to Me’
On Tuesday night, Fox News’ Bret Baier took time away from the anchor desk to appear on The Late Show, and immediately — and predictably — got hit with the question on everyone’s mind.
Host Stephen Colbert wasted no time in bringing up the sexual harassment allegations lobbied at Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes, who is the subject of a lawsuit filed by former network anchor Gretchen Carlson. Baier spoke briefly to Ailes’ character, noting that the boss had always been a supportive figure throughout Baier’s nineteen years with the cable net.
“What’s it like over there in the hallways? Because other people have come out and supported these accusations. Are there lawyers everywhere? What’s the mood over there?” Colbert pressed. “What’s the response over there we’ve not seeing?”
“The Roger I know has been amazing to me, amazing to a lot of people who have been coming out privately and publicly supporting him,” responded Baier. “He’s one of the first people who called when my son had open heart surgery — not once, but three times. That’s the Roger I know.”
The Fox vet continued, telling Colbert, “These headlines are foreign to me. We have a lot to focus on,” referring to the heat of the 2016 election.
