CNN Anchor and Guests Seem Surprised That Trump Didn’t Attack Media During Speech to Military
Following President Donald Trump’s speech abaord the USS Gerald R. Ford this afternoon, CNN anchor Brianna Keilar and her gathered panel seemed a bit surprised that the president didn’t use this opportunity to attack the press.
With the big news surrounding Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his contact with the Russian ambassador taking up much of the media’s attention, CNN political director David Chalian said that while he wasn’t anticipating Trump would address it directly in the speech, Trump’s silence on the matter is noteworthy.
“He seems to be keeping with this notion of not going off on Twitter, in the last couple of days,” he said. “Not taking this opportunity for yet another Russia tie to the Trump world story out there to slam the news media about fake news or to discredit. He just ignored it and really tried to stay focused on what he was there to talk about.”
Keilar weighed in, asking political analyst Gloria Borger if Trump can can continue to do this because he’s shown in the past “that he cannot do that.”
Borger noted that he stuck to the script because his staff wanted him to and the venue wasn’t right. However, in her opinion, “you’re going to hear the president talk about it” at some point.
