Congressman Steve Israel, the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, is stepping down after his party suffered crushing losses nationwide in this week’s midterm elections. Israel has run the House Democratic campaign arm since 2011.
In a New York Times profile out today, Israel said definitively, “I’ll tell you what I’m not going to do over any term. I’m not going to stay on as D.C.C.C. chair.”
And just to throw more salt in the wound, while no one was expecting the Democrats to retake the House, the Times profile notes that “with him at the helm, Democrats lost at least 14 seats nationwide in the election this week.”
And if DCCC sounds vaguely familiar to you, yes, it’s that one group that sent those increasingly desperate emails for money over the entire campaign cycle.
