Despite Initial Verification, Rupert Murdoch’s Wife’s Twitter Account Revealed To Be Fake [UPDATE]
In perhaps the biggest lapse in Twitter’s verification history, the Wendi_Deng Twitter account, purporting to be News Corporation CEO Rupert Murdoch‘s wife, has been confirmed as a fake.
In subsequent tweets, the fake user wondered why it took so long to be found out.
“But you do have to wonder why they were unsure for so long”
…and…
“And you have to wonder even more why Twitter verified this account for a full day. I never received any communication from them about this.”
Mediaite has reached out to Twitter for comment, and will update the story with any responses as we receive them.
UPDATE: In a statement, Twitter says that:
“We don’t comment on our verification process but can confirm that the @wendi_deng account was mistakenly verified for a short period of time. We apologize for the confusion this caused.”
