The 2016 presidential campaign has been marked by a very different strain of “audacity” than we’ve ever seen before, and so it is that we find ourselves seriously having to ask if Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump faked his own medical examination last week, maybe not even because he’s hiding anything, but just for gits and shiggles.
The issue of Trump’s health has been kept simmering by the loopy doctor’s note his campaign presented several months ago, and has come to a boil this week om the heels of heightened media interest in Hillary Clinton‘s health. As such, both candidates have promised to release more detailed health information, and on Tuesday, it was revealed that Trump would do so with an appearance on The Dr. Oz Show. Many have expressed skepticism about how much Trump will allow Dr. Mehmet Oz to reveal, but something I saw Tuesday made me wonder if Trump had been examined by a doctor at all.
Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, who was already having a rough day, appeared on MSNBC Tuesday afternoon to tell Andrea Mitchell that Trump had undergone a physical examination “late last week,” which means either Thursday or Friday, when Trump was doing events in Cleveland, Washington, and Pensacola. Is it possible he managed to sneak away without the press noticing? Come to think of it, why even hide it fro the press for nearly a week?
For any other candidate, this wouldn’t even be a question, but since Trump has a documented history of fabricating entire people, then admitting he did that, then denying it later, you really have to wonder: did he really go to a doctor last week, or is it all just another audacious John Miller-style lie?
Those suspicions aside, I didn’t hear alarm bells until Kellyanne Conway said this deeply weird thing to Andrea Mitchell (emphasis mine):
Conway: So he had that physical last week because he believes that it’s important for the public to know what his basic health condition is. And he has said that the doctor is preparing his report, and that it will be made available this week.
Mitchell: And was it with Dr. Bornstein?
Conway: That, I don’t know. I was not present for his physical.
Wait, what? Why would Kellyanne Conway volunteer that she was “not present for his physical?” In fact, what reason could there ever possibly have been for anyone to think she would be present for Trump’s physical?
This is what we in the biz call a “tell.” Kellyanne Conway probably doesn’t know for sure if Trump really saw a doctor last week, but she’s revealing here that even she has her doubts, because she only knows, so far, what Donald Trump has told her. By noting that she wasn’t present for Trump’s physical, she’s inoculating herself against the eventual revelation that Trump didn’t so much as see a Dr. Pepper last week, let alone an actual doctor.
Conway does it again later in the interview, noting that she has “not conferred with” the doctor:
And now comes the news that Trump won’t be revealing any actual medical documentation at all to Dr. Oz. Will anyone press Trump or his campaign to reveal the name of the totally real doctor who actually performed an extraordinarily fabulous physical on him last Thursday or Friday? Let’s find out.
