ESPN’s Barry Melrose and Okla. St. Coach Mike Gundy Chatted About Their Mullets and it Was Awesome

Whoever came up with this idea deserves a raise.

Some ESPN SportsCenter producer, presumably, had the brilliant thought of putting ESPN hockey analyst Barry Melrose together with Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy for an interview. That wouldn’t seem like the greatest idea, given that Melrose’s expertise lies with the NHL and Gundy is a college football coach.

But these two weren’t there to talk about sports. They were there to talk mullets.

Melrose used to rock a prolific mullet. Gundy currently sports one. And for the better part of four minutes during Tuesday night’s edition of SportsCenter, the two shared the tricks of the mullet trade.

“You’ve gotta to have good genes,” Gundy said. “You’ve gotta have great hair. And you’ve gotta make sure you have the right product. And as you know, there’s a lot of pressure when you have hair like this. You’ve gotta make sure it looks right.”

The great product to which Gundy was referring is Butch Wax. Melrose speculated that Gundy’s secret was bear grease or honeycomb. But it turned out to be neither.

Melrose confessed that his wife never appreciated his mullet, but Gundy claims that his family is on board.

“My boys…they were a little skeptical about maybe embarrassing them in front of their friends. I have a 20-year-old in college, and he thinks it’s pretty cool. So I guess it’s even keel at the house.”
