GOP Candidate: Race Prevents Obama from Getting Impeached
A candidate for Iowa’s GOP primary for U.S. Senate said the main reason Republicans won’t impeach President Barack Obama is race.
“I would say there are people in the House of Representatives right now that would very much like to take the opportunity to start the process,” former radio host Sam Clovis told the Daily Times Herald. “And I think the reason that they’re not is because they’re concerned about the media.”
According to the paper, Clovis did not list causes for impeachment, but mused that the media would be harsher on a party impeaching a black president than a white one — an insurmountable hurdle, he added, given that the GOP’s previous impeachment attempt, on former President Bill Clinton, didn’t exactly work either.
“Now we have a situation where race is thrown into the cards as well,” Clovis said. “Whether we like it or not, race is an issue.”
“It’s not that what he has done would not rise to the level where it might be impeachable,” Clovis said. “I don’t think it’s a practical, pragmatic issue. And simply because I don’t think the nation is ready for it.”
Clovis is one of five candidates for the GOP nomination, but argues he has crucial support from grassroots conservative organizations.
