‘I Can See Russia From My House’: A Year of Sarah Palin, The Video Highlights

What a difference a year makes. A year ago Thursday, five days after being tapped by John McCain to be his VP running mate, Sarah Palin made her honest-to-goodness public debut giving the keynote speech on day three of the GOP convention in St. Paul. It was, by any measure, a good speech, and a great debut. It also marked the world's first introduction to Bristol, Trig, "first dude" Todd, Levi, and the rest of the family von Palin. Oh those happy, hazy, days. Twelve months later it's hard to remember a time when Palin wasn't part of our media, entertainment, and political landscape, dontchya know! Here is a look at the video highlights from the year of Palin. August 29, 2008 - Senator John McCain celebrates his birthday by introducing Sarah Palin as the running mate "who can best help shake up Washington." Be careful what you wish for! NEXT: Palin Makes Her Convention Debut Sept 3, 2008 - Two days after it is revealed that her teenage daughter Bristol is pregnant (enter Levi!), Sarah Palin gives a rousing, impressive speech at the GOP convention in St. Paul and leaves everybody wondering whether McCain's decision was, in fact, a stroke of genius. Little did we know, this was as good as it was going to get. That said, the strength of this speech carried Palin through the next couple of weeks of scrutiny; right up until the SNL premiere. From the moment Palin hit the national stage people began remarking on her close resemblance to Tina Fey, and anticipating some sort of SNL send-up. And boy did they deliver. Nobody could have anticipated the full impact of Fey's weekly impression of Palin, or the reemergence ofSNL as a must-see, cultural and political force to be reckoned with. During one Palin claims to have read "all the news." The McCain-Palin campaign never quite recovers. It was at this point you began to wonder whether John McCain was starting to regret his decision. NEXT: Letterman says it ain't ho! Come Spring, McCain staffers are ready to dish dirt on Palin in an attempt to salvage the Senator's reputation. Vanity Fair runs a not-so-flattering profile of the Alaskan Gov. Later that month David Letterman makes an inappropriate joke about Palin's daughter. Which daughter? It's none too clear, but Palin presumes the worst and Letterman eventually apologizes.
