Juan Williams: Stop Trying to Brand Black Republicans as ‘Racial Traitors’
Fox News’ Juan Williams wrote a column for The Hill yesterday going after black Democrats for all but saying aloud that black Republicans like Mia Love and Tim Scott are “racial traitors.”
Williams picked up on a few comments from Democrats, including Congressman James Clyburn dismissing the idea that Scott becoming the first black senator elected in the South since Reconstruction is progress, because he “votes against the interest and aspirations of 95 percent of the black people in South Carolina.”
Williams pointed to his own son, a black Republican, as an example of why this is a ridiculous argument. He points the blame of racism at “self-declared progressives who gloss over the fact that black people who are politically conservative and Republican have just as acute a sense of racial history — and of racial pride — as do their liberal counterparts.”
“There is no excuse,” he says, “for assuming these three are racial traitors, or for insisting that all black people think alike.”
Williams also joined a number of conservatives in expressing outrage that the NAACP completely ignored Scott’s win, as well as Love’s, in their post-midterms statement.
