KY Gov-Elect Addresses Kim Davis Issue, Will Remove Clerk Names from Marriage Licenses
When the Kim Davis controversy was at a fever pitch in Kentucky, one of her strongest defenders was Republican gubernatorial candidate Matt Bevin. He called on the current governor to defend the Constitutional rights of county clerks and railed against her jailing.
Well, this week Bevin was elected governor, and during a press conference today he addressed that very issue that Davis had been awash in controversy over.
According to The New York Times, Bevin said at a press conference today, “One thing I will take care of right away is we will remove the names of the county clerks from the marriage forms.”
Outgoing governor Steve Beshear said in September he is unable to change that, explaining, “If the legislature wants to come in January and change the process for issuing marriage licenses, they’re free to do so.”
Bevin disagreed today and declared, “The idea that cannot be done is baloney. We will do that by executive order. We will do that right out of the gate.”
Bevin gets sworn in on December 8th.
