NY Times: LeBron James Should Play For Michael Jordan In Charlotte
William C. Rhoden wrote an open letter to LeBron James in yesterday’s New York Times, imploring him to play for the Charlotte Bobcats and their majority owner, Michael Jordan.
James’ contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers is up at the end of this season, and he is widely considered to be the biggest free agent prize in NBA history.
Jordan, meanwhile, is the game’s most recognizable icon and owns the Charlotte Bobcats. When the deal was made last month he became the NBA’s second African-American majority owner (the first was the Bobcats’ former owner, Robert L. Johnson).
The implications of such a marriage, and Charlotte’s relative infancy as a franchise, are why Rhoden thinks LeBron should go to Charlotte:
The greatest tribute you could pay him [Jordan] — dollars notwithstanding — is joining forces with him next season and creating a dynasty in Charlotte. The two of you could forge a powerful alliance and achieve in an unprecedented way.
Imagine the story line: Charlotte became the 30th member of the N.B.A. on May 3, 2004. Six years later, LeBron James joins the franchise and takes it to heights previously unknown.
Before now, Charlotte has never been in the conversation of possible destinations for LeBron. Many experts think he’ll re-sign with the Cavaliers, but the New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets are rumored contenders for his services.
