Madison DA Announces Cop Will Not Be Charged in Tony Robinson’s Death

Wisconsin district attorney Ismael Ozanne announced today that Madison officer Matt Kenney will not be charged in the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Tony Robinson.

Kenney had been responding to call about someone running in and out of traffic, and followed Robinson to his apartment, where there was a reported assault, and Kenney ended up fatally shooting Robinson.

Ozanne broke down all the information surrounding the case today, addressing all the reports about Robinson’s aggressive behavior before he was killed. He addressed the race issues surrounding this case, remarking, “Whether we are policing, teaching, or parenting, when we use violence to control, we do so at a tremendous cost––to the person, to our community, and ultimately, to our humanity.” Ozanne said he understands “the very real racial disparities and inequity issues that exist in this county,” but insisted he made his decision based on the facts.

Robinson’s death set off protests across Madison, invoking the nationwide chant of “black lives matter.” And Ozanne addressed the “violence” and outrage that occurred after similar situations in places like Baltimore.
