Following the Republican’s denunciation of the recent CIA torture report, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) speculated that the motive behind its release had little to do with a desire for transparency.
“It served absolutely no purpose other than one last thumb in the eye of the Bush administration,” he said during an event held by Politico this morning.
“This is the Democrats’ only report. It had no recommendations,” Sen. McConnell added, according to remarks caught by Talking Points Memo. “It served no purpose other than to confirm what we already knew that certain techniques were used on a few people.”
Yesterday, he and Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) released a joint statement accusing the Democrats of misrepresenting techniques that did serve intelligence purposes, and Sen. McConnell reiterated his belief today. “It served absolutely no purpose other than one last thumb in the eye of the Bush administration and was a big mistake in my opinion,” he said.
