Melania Trump Reportedly Made At Least $100k From Photos For Use in ‘Positive Stories’ Only
A new report suggests that Melania Trump might’ve made up to $1 million in royalties because of an unusual licensing agreement with Getty Images.
NBC News looked through President Trump‘s financial disclosure forms and found that the First Lady made at least $100,000 from the usage of almost 200 pictures by Belgian photographer Regine Mahaux. These photos are licensed under Getty and come with the legal condition that they can only be used for “positive coverage.”
The report says NBC News used Mahaux’s photos, which means the network has made indirect payments to the Trump family. At least a dozen other news sources featured these photos as well, including Yahoo News, Marie Claire, Fox News and Houston Chronicle.
An NBC spokesperson insists that they did not sign an agreement to only use the Mahaux photos in positive coverage, nor were they aware of the royalties that were being paid to the first lady. Several of the outlets who used the photos were contacted, saying they were not aware of the licensing arrangement and would take the photos out of their articles.
“We were not aware of this specific arrangement with Getty nor was our editorial influenced by it,” said a Yahoo spokesman. “We have removed the image from Yahoo Lifestyle.”
