MTV has added “Trending” as a new category this year to its MTV Movie & TV Awards which features “moments that took over your newsfeed this past year,” and not surprisingly, Melissa McCarthy has earned herself a nomination for her incredible impression of Press Secretary Sean Spicer on Saturday Night Live. McCarthy debuted the impression back in February and after rave reviews, has been back several times. She’ll also be hosting the show on May 13th, where she’ll more than likely bring it back.
While McCarthy’s impressions have made for some of the most talked about TV moments of the Trump administration, Spicer, at least publicly, has not had a lot to say about them. After her first appearance, he said she “could dial back” on it. Now, he says he’s usually “fast asleep” when she’s on.
Also nominated in the trending category are “Lady Gaga Carpool Karaoke” from The Late Late Show with James Corden, “Cash Me Outside How Bout Dat” from Dr. Phil, “Run The World (Girls)” feat. Channing Tatum as Beyoncé from Lip Sync Battle, “Wheel of Musical Impressions with Demi Lovato” from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and last, but certainly not least, Winona Ryder‘s Winning SAG Awards Reaction from the 23rd Annual SAG Awards.
This year, they’ve also added a “Musical Moment” category which “honors the artists who soundtracked your favorite movies and TV shows.”
The MTV Movie & TV Awards air on Sunday, May 7 at 8 p.m. EST.
