Mike Barnicle is really living his best life.
On Tuesday’s episode of Morning Joe — again bereft of Mika and Joe, who seem to be living their best August — the show’s resident grandfather opened up strong, with a pithy monologue that cut to the nut of Donald Trump’s various tortured statements about the white supremacist violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The money line:
“The President of the United States ceded his moral authority on Saturday.”
Like the wise man in an old Frank Capra film, Barnicle succinctly hit upon the true problem with Trump’s prevarications and in many ways presented the opposite of the “Trump became president with this XXX” line we have become accustomed to hearing from lesser pundits.
The pace of the media and the country today has been accelerated and it has been accelerated every single day. This might be a moment to pump the breaks. To stop and pause and think about what just happened to the presidency. The President of the United States ceded his moral authority on Saturday. He could not distinguish the difference between protests and Nazis, Nazis, on the streets of an American city fomenting a riot. This is not the American story we’re witnessing. This is a selfish inward destructive story that’s taking place and the president’s voice is lacking and the president has decided not to lead but to follow and to follow what and who, we really don’t know but it’s not good.
Well done Mike.
