Morning Joe Strangely Avoids Commentary About Megyn Kelly-Newt Gingrich Blowup

One of the first thoughts I had after watching former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich‘s meltdown last tonight on The Kelly File was how the morning shows would handle the episode. I expected MSNBC’s Morning Joe to use the clip as red meat, allowing the panel to shred into the Trump candidacy — more notably its spiraling surrogates — or perhaps join in some form of the growing support for Megyn Kelly‘s handling of the hostile situation (#ImWithMegyn was an immediate trending topic last night).

Instead, nary a word.

Former White House communications chief Nicolle Wallace made quick reference to the instantly infamous Kelly-Gingrich fiasco at the top of the show, without follow-up or discussion. Then, at 6:23 a.m., cohost Mika Brzezinski simply intro’d the clip in question, then added, “We show it to you know without comment.”

Gingrich at one point during the exchange charged Kelly with media bias, saying firmly, “I’m sick and tired of people like you using language that’s inflammatory that’s not true!… When you use the words, you took a position. And I think it’s very unfair of you to do that, Megyn!”

He added in no uncertain terms, “You are fascinated with sex and you don’t care about public policy! That’s what I get out of watching you tonight!”

The exchange was red hot through political media Twitter last night, but Morning Joe for some reason wasn’t touching it with a 39 and a half foot pole.

Cohost Joe Scarborough had to be reminded of the “without comment,” part by Brzezinski as he began to, well, comment… but not on the exchange itself; instead, Scarborough seemed to tease Megyn Kelly’s use of the third-person description of her program, “We on the Kelly File…”

“We’re not gonna comment,” Brzezinski said.
