Newly Released Emails Show Lois Lerner Suggested Auditing GOP Senator

Emails released today by the House Ways and Means Committee reveal that former IRS official Lois Lerner floated the idea of auditing Republican Senator Chuck Grassley after accidentally receiving an invitation to an event that was meant for the senator.

In an email Lerner sent to another IRS official [PDF], she suspected the event organizers of “inappropriately offering to pay for his wife” and suggested they “should refer to Exam.”

The other official responded by saying they shouldn’t proceed right away, they should wait to see if Grassley accepts the invitation first and what he ends up reporting on his 1040.
