Note: This is NOT the Way to Announce on Twitter That a Former First Lady Has Died

On Sunday, former First Lady Nancy Reagan passed away at the age of 94, from what doctors have identified as a congestive heart failure. Elected officials and members of the political news media alike have offered their condolences and memories of the wife of President Ronald Reagan, and the remarkable love that the duo shared for their many decades of marriage.

But one particular news outlet — NBC News in Washington — took a slightly head-scratching approach to announcing the breaking news on Twitter Sunday:static1.squarespace

Take a good, hard look at the above photo. Notice anything strange? Well, as some of the 158 thousand followers of the @nbcwashington account figured out, that is not a photo of Nancy and Ronald Reagan at all, but it is a photo of the Reagan wax figures from Madame Tussauds in Washington D.C.

The Tweet was deleted because, I’m assuming, someone attached a photo of a WAX TOURIST ATTRACTION of the icon and activist who was one of the most influential First Ladies in American history, as opposed to any of the literally millions of photos available from her life and career.
