NY Times Not A Fan Of TechCrunch’s NY Times-Related April Fool’s Prank

It’s tough to be the classy guy. You’re never allowed to have any fun and you have to ruin the fun of everyone else. Earlier today we reported that the New York Times got punked by a law blogger’s April Fool’s trick and now, it seems, they also just didn’t get or enjoy another one that was about themselves.

Yesterday, the science and technology blog TechCrunch pulled a few pranks for the holiday. Their final one included posting an article about the Times announcing their iPad app. The joke was though, that the post was actually a reprinting of the Times’ own article from 1996 touting their first web site appearing on that “World Wide Web” thing that was so hot back then. Buzzkill as ever, the Times sent TechCrunch an e-mail simply asking them to remove the post as it contained “extremely old information that is inaccurate”.

The New York Times is one of the most-respected newspapers in the entire world and they didn’t get that way by joking around. Wouldn’t it be nice, though, if they could loosen up like…ever? Next year, we would be so happy if they pulled their own April Fool’s prank! They could, y’know, get the New York Post’s pun writers to write all of their headlines for the day or post stock exchange reports that weren’t actually depressing. It would be great!
