It was reported last week that Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) had been accused of sexually harassing female staff members and settled a wrongful dismissal complaint with one ex-employee who claimed she was fired because she wouldn’t succumb to the lawmaker’s advances. Following these revelations, Michigan’s largest paper has demanded Conyers step down and at least two House Democrats have echoed those sentiments.

With Conyers being investigated by the Ethics Committee, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi appeared this morning on NBC’s Meet the Press, where she was pressed by host Chuck Todd on both Conyers and the accusations levied against Sen. Al Franken (D-MN).

Todd asked her about Conyers taking advantage of a Congressional rule in which he was able to hide a settlement with an accuser, causing Pelosi to say she is having the committee review the matter. This led to the MTP host questioning the California lawmaker on whether or not she believes Conyers’ accusers.

“I don’t know who they are,” she answered. “They have not come forward.”

After Pelosi added that it was for the Ethics Committee to decide if the accusations were believable — while also describing Conyers as an “icon” — Todd wanted to know what is a “fireable offense” and what would it say if Conyers gets to stay when Pelosi is stating that there should be “zero tolerance.”

“As I said, we have asked for the Ethics Committee to review that and he — I believe will do the right thing,” Pelosi responded.

Later on, Todd brought up that one House Democratic member calling for Conyers to resign from his Judiciary Committee spot and asked Pelosi if she would suspend Conyers from his ranking membership in all committees.

“I’m not sharing that with you right now,” the Democratic leader said.

Following that, Pelosi added that victims’ “concerns will be addressed in a way that I think will give comfort as well as end of this behavior because it’s disgusting, it’s repulsive and has to be zero tolerance.”
