Rubio Defends Bernie Sanders: He’s Honest and Upfront About Socialist Beliefs

Marco Rubio defended Bernie Sanders from a questioner at a New Hampshire event today over his socialist views. Not that Rubio agrees with Sanders or anything, but he did want to set the record straight and commend him for his honesty.

According to CNN, Rubio’s questioner compared the kind of socialism Sanders believes in with what Rubio’s Cuban family fled from.

Rubio said, “In fairness, they fled communism.” He clarified that what his parents fled was “beyond socialism”; a country where not only does government control society, but “controls politics, life, the banning of religion, people were being executed.”

He declined to criticize Sanders for being too extreme in his views, saying what while he doesn’t “think it works for America,” Rubio explained, “What I appreciate about Bernie is he’s not trying to shirk from it. It’s what he believes in. He’s honest about it.”
