Some might think that Donald Trump‘s presidential campaign is due to how crazy conservatives have gotten. But CNN’s S.E. Cupp has another theory: he’s only doing this well because of liberals.
Keep in mind that there are plenty of conservatives with doubts about Trump’s supposed right-wing bona fides, with his past and even very recent comments indicating his support of more liberal positions, including raising taxes on the wealthy.
So what do liberals have to do with Trump’s ascendancy? Political correctness.
Cupp argues in her new Townhall column that the reason Trump is doing so well is because politically correct liberal hypersensitivity has evolved to such ridiculous extremes that widespread support of a brash, unfiltered, and politically incorrect Trump is the natural backlash:
Thanks to unrelenting demands by the left for increasingly preposterous levels of political correctness over the past decade, people are simply fed up. Trump survives — nay, thrives! — because he is seen as the antidote, bravely and unimpeachably standing athwart political correctness…
If not for the loony sensitivities foisted upon us by the left, someone like Trump would be immediately dismissed as unprofessional and unserious, an incoherent blurter. Instead, he’s the equally extreme response to extreme correctness — if everything is offensive in Liberalville, then nothing will be offensive in Trumpland.
But as Cupp points out, Trump has clearly said offensive things, and even other Republican presidential candidates who have railed against political correctness drew a line in the sand when it came to some of Trump’s comments.
