President Donald Trump started his Saturday morning off at his New Jersey golf club by shooting off a series of tweets attacking San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz for criticizing the federal response to Hurricane Maria. Besides taking issue with Cruz slamming the White House for saying the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico was a “good news story,” Trump also insinuated that Puerto Rican victims were lazy by tweeting they wanted everything done for them.
Following the president’s tweetstorm, the mayor appeared on MSNBC’s AM Joy to address the assaults on her and the victims. And Cruz pretty much took the high road throughout.
With host Joy Reid bringing up one tweet in which the president said the mayor was being “nasty to Trump,” Cruz responded that she was just pleading for help and she wasn’t saying anything nasty about him. She then went on to reference the commander on the ground, Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan, stating that he doesn’t have enough troops for the recovery effort to further her point that more help is needed.
“This is what we have — on goal,” she added. “It is to save lives. I tweeted this morning that this is a time where everyone shows their true colors. I have no time for distractions. All I have is time for people to move forward and get help.”
Cruz would go on to describe the situation in Puerto Rico and how people are doing their best to come together.
