Sen. Jeff Flake on Corker’s Rebuke of Trump: ‘A Lot of Us Shared That Concern’

Sen. Jeff Flake said in a Politico profile out Thursday that many of his fellow colleagues share Sen. Bob Corker’s concerns that President Donald Trump is damaging American foreign policy.
Corker made headlines last week when he launched into a stunning days-long tear against the Republican president, calling the White House an “adult day care center” and claiming Trump’s rhetoric could set the U.S. “on the path to World War III.”
In the Politico profile detailing Flake’s opposition to Trump and upcoming re-election campaign, the Arizona senator outlined his chief concern with the president:
“How are we going to ever have agreements with our adversaries or with our allies if they think that we’re not a reliable partner? And what we’ve seen lately will make them question whether we’re a reliable partner,” Flake said. “That’s what Bob expressed. And a lot of us shared that concern.”
As Politico notes, his oppositional stance to the Republican president comes at a risk, given his dismal approval ratings and primary challenger, Kelli Ward, who is enjoying a swell of populist support thanks to backers like Steve Bannon and Laura Ingraham.
Read the Politico piece for more of Flake’s views on where the Republican party stands (it doesn’t look good), and where it’s going (he’s surprisingly optimistic).
