Sen. Susan Collins: If I Were Advising Trump, I’d Tell Him ‘Put Your Twitter Account on Hold’
Senator Susan Collins said today she would suggest that President Trump “not send out tweets at all.”
The first part of the wide-ranging interview concerned the Republicans’ Obamacare replacement, which she doesn’t believe will be “well-received” in the Senate (though she did add that it’s still a “work in progress”).
Collins defended Planned Parenthood from fellow Republicans who want to defund it and Couric asked, “Why do so many of your Republican colleagues have such a bee in their bonnet when it comes to Planned Parenthood? Do you think they misunderstand?”
She also weighed in on the new travel ban before Couric brought up Trump’s tweets alleging wiretapping from Barack Obama.
Collins said, “I think it would be helpful if the President has evidence of this that he turn it over to the House and Senate Intelligence Committee. We need evidence, not tweets if we are going to look into these allegations.”
Couric, bringing up Trump’s tweet about Gitmo detainees that Sean Spicer had to correct, asked Collins if Trump tweeting out falsehoods is damaging to his credibility and the credibility of the country.
Collins said this in response:
“He obviously needs to get more intelligence briefings and to be more precise. Look, if I were advising President Trump, I’d say, ‘put your Twitter account on hold and make sure that you are not sending out this storm of tweets before you are sure of your facts.’ In fact, I would suggest that he not send out tweets at all.”
Couric asked how Trump would receive that advice. Collins said he probably wouldn’t follow it because he’s “fond of Twitter.”
