Sikh American Told to ‘Go Back to Your Country, Bin Laden!’ in Chicago Hate Crime
A Sikh American was harassed and physically beaten in the Chicago suburb of Darien, and local police are treating the incident as a hate crime.
According to WMAQ, U.S. citizen Inderjit Singh Mukker was en route to a local grocery story when another driver pulled alongside him and began yelling racial slurs at him. A spokesperson for the official investigation was unable to provide details, but the Chicaho Sikh Coalition told Mukker’s story in an official press release on Wednesday.
“Terrorist,” the suspect allegedly yelled at Mukker. “Go back to your country, Bin Laden!”
What began as road rage, however, quickly escalated when the driver reached through Mukker’s open window and “began beating and punching him in the face ferociously,” said Sikh Coalition Legal Director Harsimran Kaur.
“His cheek was fractured, he had a laceration that required six stitches, he had black eyes, and bruising and swelling all over his face.”
WMAQ noted that no charges have been filed, though police did say that a suspect was in a local hospital for undisclosed reasons.
