Supreme Court Strikes Down Gay Marriage Bans in All 50 States

gay_marriage_81102178In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court of the United States has ruled that state bans on same-sex marriage are unconstitutional.

The case, Obergefell v. Hodges, was decided 5-4, with swing vote Justice Anthony Kennedy joining the liberal wing of the Court to rule that the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution does require state to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

The decision comes two years after a major victory for proponents on gay marriage in 2013. In United States v. Windsor the Defense Against Marriage Act was overruled as an act impermeably based on unconstitutional “animus.” Kennedy joined the liberal wing of the Court to author the majority opinion, which many observers believed singled how he would rule in this case.

Those observers, it appears, were right.
