Susan Collins Becomes 4th GOP Senator to Publicly Endorse Gay Marriage

Maine Senator Susan Collins publicly came out in support of marriage equality yesterday, making her the fourth sitting Republican senator to show support for gay marriage. When asked by the Bangor Daily News about her views on the subject, Collins said, “A number of states, including my home state of Maine, have now legalized same-sex marriage, and I agree with that decision.”

And in case that’s too ambiguous for you, a spokesperson for Collins affirmed that she does support gay marriage, but hasn’t weighed in very much because “what she has consistently said is she doesn’t want to get involved in state-level referendum issues.”

Collins’ declaration of support for gay marriage follows similar statements by Republican senators Rob Portman, Lisa Murkowski, and Mark Kirk.
