Do you remember former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn leading “Lock her up!” chants aimed at Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton at last year’s Republican National Convention? Well, CNN’s Jake Tapper certainly does.
At the top of tonight’s primetime edition of The Lead, Tapper recapped the news that hit about Flynn being warned by the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014 against taking foreign payments. This was after Flynn had been fired as head of the DIA by President Barack Obama and a year before he took money from Russia for an RT speech.
After reading a statement from Flynn’s attorney and highlighting the need for Flynn to ask for permission to accept foreign payments, Tapper then brought up the infamous RNC moment, playing a clip of Flynn shouting the favorite phrase among Donald Trump supporters on the campaign trail.
“That didn’t age well,” the CNN host snarked.
Tapper also took aim at the White House for essentially passing the buck on their lack of vetting of Flynn and placing the blame squarely on the shoulders of Obama. Stating there may be a point to be made about the former administration renewing Flynn’s security clearance, Tapper noted that it wasn’t “the same thing as appointing and vetting Flynn to one of the top national security positions in the US government.”
He added, “And remember, Obama fired Flynn from a lower position in the national security community.”
