Trump Claims That He Never Said He Doesn’t Pay Taxes, Just That It Would Be Smart Not To
To review, during the debate two nights ago, Hillary Clinton questioned if the reason Donald Trump won’t release his tax returns is that he hasn’t paid any federal income taxes. He countered, “That makes me smart.”
Tonight on Fox News, Bill O’Reilly asked Trump about that, guessing that it would be a hot topic for quite a while into the future. Trump asserted twice that he had never said he didn’t pay his taxes.
Then, of the “that makes me smart” remark he said, “A lot of people say, ‘That’s the kind of thinking I want running this nation.'”
“Some people loved that statement,” he explained. “And other people didn’t.”
