Trump Praises Mexico For Thwarting ‘Caravan’ of Migrants, ‘So As Not to Cause a Giant Scene’

Any loyal follower of President Donald Trump’s Twitter feed may have noticed that he has taken up the cause of a “caravan” of migrants making its way through Mexico to the U.S. border.

The now-infamous caravan has not only made it to the president’s Twitter feed, but it has also been prominently featured on Fox News and throughout right wing media — used to bolster calls to crack down on illegal immigration on the Southern Border.

Trump tweeted this week that the caravan “had better be stopped” before it reached the U.S., and announced on Wednesday that the National Guard will be sent down to secure the southern border.

Yet, as the New York Times pointed out, the fears stirred up surrounding the mysterious “caravan” brimming with illegal immigrants hellbent on assailing the U.S. are somewhat unfounded:

The narrative on the right this week, for example, mostly omitted that many people in the caravan planned to resettle in Mexico, not the United States. And it ignored how many of those who did intend to come here would probably go through the legal process of requesting asylum at a border checkpoint — something miles of new wall and battalions of additional border patrol would not have stopped.

The strange news cycle appears to have come to the end, however, punctuated by this presidential tweet:

“The Caravan is largely broken up thanks to the strong immigration laws of Mexico and their willingness to use them so as not to cause a giant scene at our Border,” Trump wrote. “Because of the Trump Administrations actions, Border crossings are at a still UNACCEPTABLE 46 year low. Stop drugs!”
