WATCH LIVE: President Trump Hosts ‘Celebration of America’ Event After Eagles Disinvited
President Trump is holding an event at the White House today––sans the Philadelphia Eagles––that is being billed as a “Celebration of America.”
To recap: yesterday the President said in a statement the Super Bowl champs will not be going to the White House after all, citing how “they disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem.”
No Eagles players actually knelt during the season (and Fox News had to apologize after using b-roll of players kneeling in prayer during a segment on the matter).
This morning, the President tweeted, “The Philadelphia Eagles Football Team was invited to the White House. Unfortunately, only a small number of players decided to come, and we canceled the event. Staying in the Locker Room for the playing of our National Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling. Sorry!”
The White House accused the team of “abandoning” fans because they “offered to send only a tiny handful of representatives” to the event today.
The NFL, of course, recently announced teams would be fined if players kneel during the anthem. Vice President Mike Pence tweeted “#Winning” in response, and the President himself said, “You have to stand proudly for the national anthem, or you shouldn’t be playing. You shouldn’t be there. Maybe you shouldn’t be in the country. You have to stand proudly for the national anthem. And the NFL owners did the right thing if that’s what they’ve done.”
