Which Party Represents the Wealthier U.S. Districts?

In order to appeal to everyday, average Americans, both political parties like to trot out the attack that the other side is the party of the rich (or super-rich, just to make it stick more). Well, the Associated Press looked at the financial stats for every congressional district and concluded that most of the wealthiest districts in America are represented by Democrats.

The single richest congressional district in the country is New York’s 12th Congressional District, which is currently represented by Democrat Carolyn Maloney. Behind that is California’s 33rd, represented by Democrat Henry Waxman.

And House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi‘s district comes in on the list at number 8.

In the top ten list, there are only two Republicans, the highest being New Jersey’s Leonard Lance right above Pelosi at the number 7 spot. In addition, the average per capita income in Democratic districts is roughly $1,000 higher than in Republican districts.

Last year Roll Call put out a list of the 50 wealthiest members of Congress, and the top two on the list are Republicans Darrell Issa and Michael McCaul, but seven of the top ten spots are occupied by Democrats.
