Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies: Oh, Canada! Oh, USA!

As a Canadian living in the United States, I know all about the ex-pat’s particular brand of patriotism: Love from afar and appreciation of the everyday wonderful things that are uniquely, culturally of your homeland, especially since you no longer have them around to take them for granted. But I live here, in New York, for over a decade that included 9/11, and I’m pretty ferociously in love with this place, too. The city, and the country — growing up as a next-door neighbor to the U.S. meant enjoying all the cultural overflow from below the 49th, while still feeling a singular pride in our own….especially if they made it in the U.S. We’re two very different countries, but pretty staunch allies and genuine friends.

So that’s why it felt so great to watch not only my homies from Canada come in bearing the Red and White, but my other homies from the U.S.A. Best of luck to both awesome and inspiring teams. Happy to be rooting for both of you.
