Biden Meets with Alexei Navalny’s Family in ‘Sensitively Arranged’ Meeting
President Joe Biden met with the widow and daughter of Alexei Navalny in San Francisco, California.
MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell was the first to report about the “sensitively arranged” meeting between Biden, Yulia Navalnaya, and Dasha Navalnaya, the daughter of Alexei and Yulia, who also attends Stanford University.
Biden confirmed the meeting shortly after by tweeting photos from it. He referred to Alexei Navalny as “Aleksey” in his statement, an alternative transliteration for the Russian opposition leader’s name.
“Today, I met with Yulia and Dasha Navalnaya – Aleksey Navalny’s loved ones – to express my condolences for their devastating loss,” he wrote. “Aleksey’s legacy of courage will live on in Yulia and Dasha, and the countless people across Russia fighting for democracy and human rights.”
Yulia Navalnaya has vowed to continue her husband’s work. She appeared at the Munich Security Conference shortly after his passing under mysterious circumstances and said she took the stage because that’s what her husband would have done.
Navalny returned to Russia in January 2021 after he had been poisoned in what was suspected to be an assassination attempt. The defiant activist returned and was quickly put behind bars. Russian officials have continued to claim he died of natural causes.
Biden made it clear after Navalny’s death that he placed blame on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Russian authorities are going to tell their own story,” the president said. “Make no mistake. Make no mistake, Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death. Putin is responsible for what has happened, and evolving is yet more proof of brutality. No one should be fooled. Not in Russia, not at home, not anywhere in the world.”
