Gaza Protesters Block Streets Near White House Ahead of State of the Union Speech

A large group of protesters calling for a ceasefire in Gaza attempted to block President Joe Biden’s motorcade on Thursday ahead of his State of the Union speech.

Videos from the scene showed protesters blocking roads and holding banners which read, “Biden’s legacy is genocide” and “The people demand: stop arming Israel.”

The protests delayed Biden’s State of the Union speech in Congress, which was scheduled to start at 9 p.m., however Secret Service were ultimately able to circumvent the protesters by taking an alternate route.

“We are waiting for the president to leave the White House. Normally we would have expected him to have left by now,” said CNN anchor Jake Tapper as Biden could be seen walking out of the White House to his motorcade. “There are massive protests in Washington, D.C.”

Later on, as Biden’s motorcade could be seen on its way to Congress, Tapper said, “Apparently Secret Service was able to plan an alternate route. There are big protests in Washington, D.C. tonight. People who are demanding a ceasefire, which the president has, by the way, been trying to get done.”
