‘I Do’: Trump Tells Press He Thinks Putin Will Listen to Plea to Stop Attacks on Ukraine
In his first comments to the press after Russia launched an attack on Ukraine’s capital city, President Donald Trump said he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin will listen to him and stop.
Early Thursday morning, Russia launched its deadliest attack in nine months, launching more than 70 missiles and 145 drones into Kyiv. The attack struck residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure, killing at least nine people and wounding 60 more.
In response to the news of the attack, Trump took to Truth Social to demand Putin to stop, writing:
I am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV. Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Let’s get the Peace Deal DONE!
On Thursday afternoon, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre arrived at the White House for a meeting with Trump. Moments after the two greeted one another and shook hands, a member of the press shouted from the distance, “President Trump, sir, today you told Vladimir Putin with the attacks. Do you think he’ll listen to you?”
“I do,” Trump responded.
The same member of the press then asked if there was still a chance for peace, but Trump and the prime minister had already turned around and started walking into the White House.
