Jon Stewart Knocks CNN for Describing Civilians Killed in Gaza Food Line as ‘Chaotic Incident’
Daily Show host John Stewart took aim at CNN on Thursday for a particular description of Palestinians killed and wounded while waiting for aid in Gaza on Thursday.
More than 100 people were killed while in line for food and aid in Gaza, according to the Health Ministry, pushing the total death toll to over 30,000 since the Israel-Hamas war began after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing more than 1,000 and kidnapping hundreds.
Israeli forces reportedly opened fire on a crowd while aid was being delivered to Gaza. Israeli officials said that the majority of those who died were killed by being trampled or run over by the aid trucks rather than Israeli gunfire. Hundreds more were injured.
Stewart, who recently rejoined The Daily Show, questioned CNN describing the tragedy as a “chaotic incident.”
“Umm…note to CNN…a ‘chaotic incident’ is college kids storming a basketball court, not a massacre at a food line…” the comedian wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Multiple CNN anchors also referred to the scene as a “chaotic incident,” including Dana Bash, Jim Acosta, and John Berman, and the phrase was used by the CNN Breaking News social media account.
Acosta and others, however, also employed “horrific” and other descriptions to capture the tragedy, much of which needed a graphic content warning before being aired on the network.
President Joe Biden said on Thursday that the Gaza deaths will complicate current negotiations for remaining hostages and a ceasefire.
