Majority of Republicans in at Least Two Super Tuesday States Say Trump ‘Fit for Presidency’ Even If He’s Convicted of a Crime

A majority of Republican voters in at least two Super Tuesday states say Donald Trump is fit to be president even if he is convicted of crimes.

Voters headed to the polls in 15 states on Tuesday to cast their ballots in various races, including the Democratic and Republican presidential primaries. President Joe Biden and former President Trump are expected to clean up in their barely-contested races. Biden’s approval ratings have languished for months and several national polls show Trump ahead. That’s despite the fact the former president is under criminal indictment in four jurisdictions. Two of those cases stem from Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election, which he falsely claimed was rigged against him.

During CNN’s Super Tuesday coverage, the network aired exit polling of Republican voters in Virginia and North Carolina showing that a majority of GOP voters in those states believe Trump is “fit for the presidency” if he is convicted of a crime.

CNN Political Director David Chalian presented viewers with the data. He noted that in Virginia and North Carolina, 31% and 39% of Republicans consider themselves “part of the MAGA movement” respectively.

“Back to Virginia, We asked, if Donald Trump is convicted of a crime Is he still fit for the presidency?” Chalian noted. “Fifty-three percent – a majority of Republican primary voters – say yes, Donald Trump is still fit for the presidency even if he is convicted of a crime. Forty percent say no. In North Carolina, even more so. Sixty-four percent of Republican primary voters in the Tar Heel State are saying, yes Trump is fit for the presidency even if a convicted criminal. Only 32%… say he is not. This is Donald Trump’s Republican Party.”
