The family of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. rushed out a statement condemning his decision to suspend his independent presidential campaign and endorse former President Donald Trump on Friday.
In a speech in Phoenix, Kennedy slammed the Democratic Party of which he was a member until just last year when he registered as an independent. The environmentalist and vaccine skeptic accused the party of his father, uncle, and the rest of his family of colluding with the media and tech companies to freeze him out of the race.
Unable to secure ballot access in two swing states, Kennedy suspended his longshot White House bid and threw his support behind Trump.
In a letter obtained by CNN’s Manu Raju shortly after the announcement, a number of Kennedy’s closest relatives called his campaign “sad” and doubled down on their endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris.
“We want an America filled with hope and bound together by a shared vision of a brighter future, a future defined by individual freedom, economic promise and national pride,” the letter stated. “We believe in Harris and Walz. Our brother Bobby’s decision to endorse Trump today is a betrayal of the values that our father and family hold most dear. It is a sad ending to a sad story.”
The letter was signed by Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Courtney Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy, Chris Kennedy, and Rory Kennedy.
“We want to make crystal-clear our feeling that the best way forward for America is to reelect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to four more years,” Kerry Kennedy while endorsing President Joe Biden in April.
The candidate responded at the time he was “pleased” to see his family was participating in the political process.
I hear some of my family will be endorsing President Biden today. I am pleased they are politically active — it’s a family tradition. We are divided in our opinions but united in our love for each other.
I hold this as a possibility for America too. Can we disagree without…
